Selecting and Connecting Your Portable Generator

Portable generators are known as excellent, interim, power sources; however, to ensure they are ready when Subaru Robin Generator R1700iyou need them, they require proper installation and operation.  Selecting and Connecting Your Portable Generator addresses two critical areas to be aware of with any portable generator investment.  These areas are selection and connection.

The first step in Selecting and Connecting Your Portable Generator is the selection process.  Selecting and Connecting Your Portable Generator includes several areas that should be calculated to ensure the portable generator you choose will meet all of your power requirements:

  • Voltage ratings should match – The voltage rating of your generator and the voltage rating of whatever item(s) you plan to operate should match.   For instance, portable generators are commonly rated for 120v or a combination of 120v/240v.  Check the rating of the item(s) you plan to run.  A 120v generator cannot run a 240v appliance.
  • Adequate start up wattage – Items that are motor driven, require 3x their normal wattage to start or cycle a compressor.   Choose a generator that has a surge rating that meets or exceeds start up wattage and constant wattage requirements.
  • Constant wattage needed - Constant wattage is the total wattage of all the items you plan to run, added together.  A portable generator can only operate a limited number of items at a time so calculate exactly what you need it to run.

Connecting Your Portable Generator

The next step in the process of Selecting and Connecting Your Portable Generator is connecting your portable generator.  With Selecting and Connecting Your Portable Generator, there are two important areas in the connection process as follows:

  • Avoid back feed – Back feed is to be avoided at all costs.  Back feed occurs when a generator is connected improperly and electricity is fed back to the power lines.  Back feed is a serious situation that can damage your generator, and in severe cases, cause injury and even creating a life threatening situation.  To prevent back feed, you should use a transfer switch installed by an electrician.  The transfer switch closes line you don't need but opens the line between your generator and the main panel.   In lieu of a transfer switch, a direct hookup (between generator and appliances) also minimizes back feed.  For extra protection during direct hookup, switch your circuit breakers and/or main fuses to the “off” position.
