Operating Your Portable Generator

If you've selected and connected your portable generator, the next step is Operating Your Portable Generator.  Winco HPS12000 Portable GeneratorThis is an important component, which is essential to keeping your portable generator in tip-top share.  Correct operation will ensure your portable generator is always ready, and fully operational, when you need it to be.  There are several steps in the process of correctly Operating Your Portable Generator as follows:

  • Ventilation - Portable generators should not be operated in enclosed spaces due to carbon monoxide emissions.  Always operate your portable generator in a dry, well ventilated, location.
  • Keep it Dry - Ensure your hands are dry and that you are not standing in water, or another liquid, when operating your portable generator.  Liquid is a conduit and could lead to dangerous electrical shock.
  • Fuel - Handle with caution.  Your portable generator should be off when refueling because fuel can ignite if it comes in contact with hot parts or a spark.  Fuel should always be stored in a proper container in a secure, well-ventilated, location.
  • Protect your appliances and/or electronics  - Appliances, lights, and/or other items, should be turned off or disconnected before operating your portable generator.  Once your portable generator is up and running, it's safe to turn your appliances and lights back on.
  • Extension Cord - Ensure your extension cord is UL-listed and 3 pronged. It should also be the proper size (wire gauge) to run your specific load.

When Power is Restored to Your Portable Generator

When Operating Your Portable Generator, there is always a point when power will be restored.  There are two ways to approach power restoration depending on how your portable generator was connected, either via transfer switch or direct hookup.  The procedures for Operating Your Portable Generator after power restoration are as follows:

  • Transfer Switch - Turn off the portable generator using the transfer switch per the manufacturer's instructions.  This should resume normal power supply.
  • Direct Hookup - Turn off all appliances, electronics and/or lights being run by the portable generator.  Disconnect the portable generator per manufacturer's instructions.  Circuit breaker and/or main fuses should be return to normal "on" positions.  It's now safe to turn on your appliances, electronics and/or lights.
